The death
rate of deaths caused by overdose is increasing at an alarming rate. So far in
2016, there have been 308 overdose deaths so far, an astonishing 75 percent
more than the same period in 2015. Out of 308 of those deaths, Fentanyl and
other opioids make up the cause of 250 of them. Dr. Mark Tyndall has stated
that "We spent last year worrying about an
Ebola outbreak in B.C. and spent millions of dollars and a lot of
resources on that and [he thinks] we need to put the same kind of focus on
this catastrophe." Dr. Tyndall has called this situation “a crisis’ and
believes that workers in the healthcare need to keep pushing to get what they
need for carrying out proven treatments.
The
fact that statistics are growing this rapidly proves that changes must be made
to help protect people’s lives. The increased amount of fentanyl found laced
into various drugs in a scary situation. People are overdosing on drugs that
they were not even aware of to be so strong, Vancouver must provide a more
accessible and helpful addiction center for people struggling with substance
abuse.
