The Met Gala held at the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in
New York City on May 2nd was a star studded event. Celebrities
gathered to celebrate this year’s opening of the Costume Institute’s annual
fashion exhibit. Every year the fundraising gala carries the same theme as the
new fashion exhibit. This year, stars showcased modern pieces that fit into the
theme of “Manus x Machina: Fashion in An Age of Technology”. The gala was
filled with celebrities who wore a variety of designer’s creations but one
piece that stood out to many was a beautiful dress worn by Claire Dane and
designed by Zac Posen. The dress was first seen as a pale blue ballgown with a
fitted bodice but later it the night it unexpectedly lit up from within. Zac
Posen used fiber optics to create this magnificent piece that captured the
attention of many.
The first time I saw this dress I was
amazed by the design and idea of it. It easily stood out as the most memorable
design for me and stole the show of the 2016 Met Gala. Claire Dane looked
stunning in this magnificent design with her simple hair, makeup, and
jewellery, allowing the dress to speak for itself. Seeing this dress introduced
me to Zac Posen, a designer I wasn’t aware of before seeing this dress, but
have since researched other designs of his. The use of fiber optics to create
the glowing effect was an extremely unique idea. Every time a designer creates
a new piece that will be heavily analyzed by the public there is always the
risk of people criticizing the design, but Zac Posen proved to impress the
masses with his unique and beautiful work.
