A very
controversial topic that has been debated for years had officially become legal
in Canada. Doctor assisted death has now become a legal act under certain
circumstances. With a topic this controversial, it’s important to have strict
laws to create specific guidelines and rules around the use of it. The proposed
bill on assisted death, B-14 states that “allowing assisted dying only for
consenting adults "in an advanced stage of irreversible decline"
from a serious and "incurable" disease, illness or disability and for
whom natural death is "reasonably foreseeable."”
I
think that this act is one that should be legal in Canada. I agree that there
must be very strict rules to ensure that it’s used in only the most unavoidable
of situations. In some situations this act is one that can be the best for
someone’s pain and suffering. Many people find it hard to accept this act, but
this is only something that should be used in the rarest of situations when
there really is no other option besides letting a patient suffer until their
illness kills them. People who use this treatment are not using it because
they’re giving up fighting, they’re using it because of the amount of physical
pain they face and that they want to have control over their fate before the
illness ruins them. I think it’s important for people in the most severe
situations to be able to decide that for themselves. Just because this act is
now legalized, it doesn’t mean that people have to pursue this as a decision,
it just provides the option for people who feel that this is the best suitable
action.
